Yes you read that correctly! We all want our kids to have straight, beautiful teeth, and if we are told that means that we have to sacrifice a tooth or two, as good parents, we will agree to do it for the long term benefit of our children.
The problem is that not all orthodontists would agree that extractions are for the long-term benefit of our children. The people with the really beautiful smiles that we see in the magazines have not lost any of their teeth. If you lose teeth your smile is narrower.
What it really boils down too is that you can either extract teeth to fit the mouth, or you can change the shape of the mouth so that all of the teeth can fit in. Did you read that right? I'll say it again. You can change the shape of someone's mouth, so that there is room for their teeth. And that's what we do. You might need to wear a little plate, as well as braces, but it can be done. And if it is done that way, it does more for you than just give you a gorgeous smile. It improves your health by improving your breathing, making more room for your tongue, & many other things.
One of our main focuses at McCloy Dental is the treatment of people who suffer from headaches, migraines, neck pain, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), vertigo (dizziness), ear congestion, shoulder pain, etc. All of these things can be caused by problems with your jaw joint (TMJ), a little joint in front of your ear. A bad, compressed bite can put pressure on that joint. We relieve that pressure by making you a little plate that allows you jaw freedom of movement, & when that happens, most of those symptoms disappear! For those who don't want to rely on wearing a plastic plate for the rest of their lives to keep them free from pain (& who does!), the simplest treatment is to move your teeth to that new, comfortable bite using braces, or a plate.
Karen at McCloy Dental is a general dentist with a special interest in providing this sort of treatment for her patients. Not all headache/migraine sufferers are adults - children have them too!
