TMJ Treatment in Caboolture: Jaw Pain, Headaches and Facial Pain Specialists.
Jaw pain, clicking, facial aches, and persistent headaches are often dismissed as stress; but for many people, the real cause is a problem with the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). At McCloy Dental, we specialise in diagnosing and treating TMJ disorders, and we're one of the very few practices in Queensland with a dentist holding a Masters degree in Sleep Medicine and postgraduate research focused specifically on facial pain.
If you've been living with jaw pain, teeth grinding, or unexplained headaches, you don't have to put up with it. Help is closer than you think.
What is TMJ Disorder?
The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to your skull. It's one of the most complex joints in the body; responsible for chewing, talking, and yawning. When it's not working correctly, the effects can ripple through your head, neck, and shoulders.
TMJ disorder (also called TMD) is more common than most people realise, and it's frequently misdiagnosed. Symptoms can include:
• Jaw pain or tenderness; especially in the morning
• Clicking, popping, or grinding sounds when you open or close your mouth
• Difficulty opening your mouth fully
• Headaches or migraines; particularly around the temples
• Earache or a feeling of fullness in the ears
• Neck or shoulder pain
• Teeth grinding (bruxism), especially at night
• Facial fatigue or aching
Why choose us at McCloy?
Dr Karen McCloy holds a Masters of Science in Sleep Medicine and is currently completing her PhD at the University of Queensland, with her research focused on orofacial facial pain. This level of specialist knowledge is exceptionally rare in general dental practice; and it means patients come to us from across South East Queensland for TMJ and facial pain treatment that other clinics can't offer.
We don't just manage the symptoms. We look at the underlying cause; whether that's bite issues, bruxism, sleep-related factors, or structural problems with the joint itself, and build a treatment plan around that.
TMJ Treatment Options
Treatment varies depending on the cause and severity of your condition. After a thorough assessment, we may recommend one or more of the following:
Occlusal Splints / Night Guards
A custom-fitted splint worn at night to protect your teeth from grinding and reduce the load on the TMJ. One of the most effective first-line treatments.
Bite Adjustment
In some cases, an uneven bite is placing excess stress on the joint. Minor adjustments to the way your teeth meet can significantly reduce TMJ symptoms.
Physiotherapy Exercises
Targeted exercises to strengthen and relax the muscles supporting the TMJ — often highly effective when done consistently.
Mandibular Advancement Devices
For patients whose TMJ is linked to sleep apnoea or snoring, a mandibular advancement device repositions the jaw during sleep to keep the airway open and reduce pressure on the joint.
Referral Where Appropriate
If your condition requires a specialist beyond our scope, we'll refer you to the right person and coordinate your care.
The Connection Between TMJ, Sleep, and Headaches
Many patients are surprised to learn that their jaw is behind their headaches, or that their snoring is connected to their facial pain. These conditions often appear separately but share the same root cause.
Dr Karen's dual expertise in TMJ and sleep medicine means she can identify these connections and address them together; rather than treating each symptom in isolation as separate conditions.
FAQ’s
Can a dentist really treat TMJ?
Yes, and often a dentist with the right training is the most appropriate person to diagnose and manage TMJ disorders, because many causes are directly related to how your teeth meet, your jaw position, and grinding habits. Dr Karen's postgraduate qualifications in this area go well beyond what most dentists offer.
How long does TMJ treatment take?
It varies. Some patients experience significant relief within a few weeks of wearing a night splint. More complex cases involving the joint structure may take several months of treatment. We'll be honest with you about realistic timelines.
Is TMJ treatment covered by health insurance?
Some treatments may be partially covered depending on your fund and level of cover. We use HICAPS for on-the-spot claiming, so you'll know exactly what you're out of pocket before you leave.
